Unearthed and OZ Minerals: Machine Learning Approaches and Outcomes from the Explorer Challenge

20 June 2019

Date and Time: Thursday June 20th, 5:30pm-7:30pm

Location: ThincLab

Cost: Free

Registrations essential, book here.

The Explorer Challenge is a collaboration between Adelaide based mining company OZ Minerals and energy and resources innovation platform Unearthed. An online crowdsourcing competition had brought together geologists and data scientists, using ground breaking machine learning and big data approaches to discover new mineral exploration targets near OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill copper-gold mine in South Australia, with one million dollars prize pool to be awarded. OZ Minerals have made 2 Tb of project data available for the competition, ranging from geochemistry and drill hole through to seismic and aeromagnetic surveys. Hundreds of people from around the globe have taken part in the Explorer Challenge in applying novel techniques to improve minerals exploration outcomes.

The AICN is fortunate to have Jess Robertson and Holly Bridgwater from Unearthed, together with Andrew McCulloch and Richard Scott from OZ Minerals presenting a talk on the machine learning approaches and outcomes from the Explorer Challenge competition, and the broader impacts for mineral exploration.

Please join us for what will be a fascinating overview of the application of machine learning and data science in a crowd sourced competition!

Speakers

Jess Robertson, Data Science Lead, Unearthed

Jess is a data scientist with extensive domain expertise in geology, physics and mathematics. He spans the gap between geo- and data scientists, helping both communities to work together to solve minerals industry problems using data-driven approaches. Prior to joining Unearthed he worked as a research scientist at CSIRO, and he holds a PhD in Earth Physics from ANU.

Holly Bridgwater, Industry Lead and Geologist, Unearthed

Holly has over 10 years experience in the resources sector, mostly as an exploration and resource development geologist. With Unearthed, Holly works with industry to bring their challenges to the Unearthed Community. Holly is passionate about innovative ways of working and tackling problems in novel ways to help the industry become more efficient and sustainable.

Andrew McCulloch, Exploration Futurist, OZ Minerals

Andrew McCulloch is a trained Geologist who is passionate about the application of data science to support business decision making. Currently the Exploration Futurist with OZ Minerals, Andrew has a wide range of experience including 15+ years in Mineral Exploration, and similar experience specifically working in Information Management, Data Management, Business Strategy and IT Consulting. Andrew has worked in many diverse industries and sectors including Oil and Gas, Engineering, Health, Government, Legal, Museums and Art Galleries.

Richard Scott, Data Analyst, OZ Minerals
